Dear Friends:
As I promised, I will continue to deal with a message that was delivered by Creflo Dollar entitled “Jesus Became God.” This response should be relatively short since what I will deal with will be very easy to refute. In fact, any “Babe” in Christ could argue this point successfully. In this message, Mr. Dollar makes the Blasphemous statement that “Jesus was not God when He came to earth, but that it was added to Him at a later time as He developed into His Sonship.”He then gives two different situations that he says proves his assertions. First, he cites the incident in which Jesus walked up to a fig tree, noticed that it had not produced any figs, and then pronounce judgment on the tree.
Second, he cites the event when Jesus and His disciples were out in the Sea of Galilee and there was a major storm confronting the disciples, but Jesus was in the bottom of the boat asleep. That, according to Mr. Dollar proves that Jesus wasn’t God because according to the O.T. our God does not “Slumber nor Sleep.” Therefore, if Jesus was God, then why was He asleep Mr. Dollar asks?
As I’ve listened to this message a few times, I am more amazed at Dollar’s ability to manipulate his congregation. It is clear that he has a biblical illiterate Church! If they were discerning enough they would raised the issues that I will in a moment. It is interesting indeed to see what a little bit of charisma, good looks, and the gift of “gab” can do to a vulnerable and unsuspecting group of people who obviously mean well.
Let’s quickly refute Mr. Dollar’s first point that since Jesus didn’t know that there wasn’t any figs on the tree, He couldn’t possibly be God! What Pastor Dollar doesn’t understand is a doctrine called “The Self-Emptying” of Christ. There are a few passages of Scripture that demonstrates this point, but perhaps the best known is found in Philippians 2:5-11. While I will not print that passage out, I do want to challenge you to read it, and there you will find that while Jesus was/is clearly God, He decides to “humble Himself” in order that He might do the Father’s will and identify with humanity.
But, at no time did He ever ceased to be God! When Jesus walked up to the fig tree He saw that the tree did not have any figs; He therefore, decided to curse the tree so that it would never again produce figs. The lesson is deeper than what Mr. Dollar is asserting. Fig trees have leaves before the figs . The mere fact that the tree had leaves is a sign that Jesus had every right to expect figs. The tree had a profession without any real possession. Jesus is teaching His disciples and us that a “profession of faith apart from fruitfulness” is unacceptable!
What Mr. Dollar didn’t say and unfortunately, his congregation seem to miss is the fact that Jesus cursed the tree, pronounced judgment upon the tree is indisputable proof that He is God! What man do you know that has ever cursed a tree or a plant and it immediately withered and dried up? Mr. Dollar says that Jesus was able to do this because He was a “Spirit-filled” man. Baloney! Has Pastor Creflo Dollar ever cursed a tree and it withered up in His presence?
Only God has authority over the creation as He is The Creator. And according to Colossians 1:16, “All things were Created by Him: (Christ) things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him.”This Scripture easily debunks Dollar’s assertion that Jesus isn’t God because He “didn’t know” that there wasn’t any figs on the tree.
The second refutation has to do with the fact that Dollar says that if Jesus was really God, then why was He asleep down in the bottom of the boat? Surely, God doesn’t slumber nor sleep. And how right He is. However, we must remember that Jesus “voluntarily” and “temporarily” emptied Himself of some of His divine prerogatives to meet some specific purpose for the glory of God. In this case, Jesus was asleep due to His humanity and the need for physical rest. Again, why didn’t Dollar point this out:
Jesus was God and demonstrated it in a very powerful and high fashion. He stood up like the God He was/is and rebuked the winds that ran back into its hiding place, consequently, bringing a sense of calmness to the waters. Who could have done that but God? What “Spirit-filled” man you and I know that can make that claim? Where were all of the Spirit-filled people when hurricane Katrina came to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast and ravaged the entire City of New Orleans and other places that are still trying to recover from the hurricane damage?
In closing, I want to say a word or two about the fact that while it is true that Jesus purposely limited Himself in certain instances, He also exhibited His divine knowledge on several occasions. The first is found in John 2:24-25. There, Jesus is said to know what was in man and therefore, He would not commit (entrust Himself) to man because “He Knew All Men”. This verse is clearly speaking of Christ’ “Omniscience” (He is All-Knowing). Another place is also found in John 1:47-51. There, Jesus sees and knows Nathaniel even before Nathaniel is anywhere near Jesus. And once Jesus made it clear, Nathaniel understood that the only way that Jesus could have seen him or even know his name He had to be somebody special, which prompted Nathaniel’s response: “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.”
These refutations are very basic and doesn’t require any more attention. I will return, Lord willing, to speak more to this message by one of the Word of Faith’s “Stars”, Mr.Creflo Dollar. Take care everyone and may God reward you abundantly as you “Study to show yourself approved unto God.”
Yours in the Master’s Service,
Sir,
Thank you for the diligent examination of Mr. Dollar’s heretical teachings. How much more do we need to hear before we call men like these what they are?
I did a write-up recently examining his claims that Jesus was a rich man (of course to justify his greed and covetousness!). His teachings consistently fall flat in the face of Holy Writ. Here is a wolf among us. No apologies offered.
Stay blessed and faithful in presenting the unchanging truths of God’s word.
Careful and thoughtful exposition of truth. May the Lord continue to strengthen you in the defense of the Faith once for all delivered to the saints.

I WANT SOME BROTHERS AND SISTERS OF MINE TO ACTUALLY HEAR THIS- CAN YOU PLEASE HELP?
Dear Sir:
Just making a few points.
Before Jesus was born the angel spoke to Mary in Luke 1:35 …. and called Him (Jesus) the Holy One who is to be born. This title is not given to mere men. Men are born in sin. He was born Holy.
Jesus knew he was not of this world at age 12. Luke 2:49 He told Joseph and Mary He was doing His Father’s business.
Jesus referred to Himself as the Son of God and the Son of Man
John 10:30-33 “I AND MY FATHER ARE ONE
31 Then the Jews took up stones to stone Him
32 Jesus said “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?
33 The Jews answered Him, saying “for a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You being a Man make Yourself equal to God.
Jesus knew He was God. He told the Jews the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled before you very eyes. Jesus allowed Himself to be tested as we are so He would know our frailty and weakness as humans. Yet He was without sin ( because God cannot sin ).
WOW!!! why must I ask do you all choose to oppose the preachings of these men and women. Just because they are in the spotlight does not mean that they are not in fact “MEN” humans and humans make what???? mistakes…not perfect, i’ve questioned a few things this that have slipped out of this mans mouth, but why don’t you understand that you are playing the devils advocate by making believers question their faith which is supported by the word which is delivered by these men i.e. Creflo A. Dollar so are you doing a justice for God or helping the Devil win christians over!!!!!! CUT IT OUT!!!!!
To AGraham:
With all due respect, you apparently have no idea as to what the word “Apologetics” mean nor the purpose of this weblog. I thought I made it clear in the “About” section. The bottom line is Mr. Dollar’s assertion that “Jesus was not God, but a man” is more than just a “little mistake.” In fact, the Bible calls it “Doctrines of Demons.” And, according to Jude, we’re to “Earnestly contend (fight) for the Faith that was once and for delivered unto the Saints.” Therefore, I am absolutely confident that the God of the Bible approves of our exposing False Teachers! Will you join us?
in response to a graham, who wrote:
“WOW!!! why must I ask do you all choose to oppose the preachings of these men and women.”
Because these preachings will cause people to accept a gospel that mentions the name of Christ but doesn’t have the power to save them. Dollar is trying to help people prosper materially. I could respect that, if he did not twist the scripture to do so. Instead of teaching principles of mental hygiene that tend to lead to affluence (which he is qualified to do based on his earned doctorate in counseling), he claims to be teaching the Word of God. But he isn’t teaching the Word of God–he is teaching a substitute gospel which will not save souls but just help people feel better while they are sliding into hell. Further down I’ll show you what I mean, but I want to respond to the next part of your comment:
“Just because they are in the spotlight does not mean that they are not in fact “MEN” humans and humans make what???? mistakes…not perfect…”
You are right. We should not (and I don’t) expect any pastor or leader to be perfect.
At the same time, just because a person is in the spotlight, or preaching on TV, or driving a Rolls Royce, does not make that person an authority to be listened to on the issue of what the Bible teaches. A person who claims to be teaching the Bible is always subject to being corrected by the Bible. We should always ask, “Is this fallible human being basing his ministry on the Bible, or is he just using the Bible to prop up his fallible human ideas?”
a graham again: “i’ve questioned a few things this that have slipped out of this mans mouth,”
If we were talking about a few things that slipped out of the mouth of an otherwise reliable source, I might agree with your response. But this is an instance of a long pattern of emphasis on things Jesus said not to emphasize, with twisting of the Scripture thrown in where it seemed to help him justify or advance his position. More on that below.
a graham: “but why don’t you understand that you are playing the devils advocate by making believers question their faith…”
I would to God that every disciple of Dollar and his kind would question their faith. A mouthed faith in Jesus while following the idol of prosperity is exactly the same in God’s sight as celebrating a golden calf and calling it Yahweh (Exodus 32).
“… which is supported by the word which is delivered by these men i.e. Creflo A. Dollar so are you doing a justice for God or helping the Devil win christians over!!!!!! CUT IT OUT!!!!!”
Was Moses helping the Devil when he came down from the mountain and rebuked the Israelites for worshipping the golden calf? After all, they were calling it by the name of the true God, so it must have been o.k., right? And Moses should have tried to be in unity with them instead of being so divisive? Read it! Whose idea was it to kill them all and start over? You don’t get on God’s side by naming your idols after Him. You get on God’s side by accepting Him on His own terms.
Here’s what Jesus had to say about a life or ministry that revolves around getting stuff:
Mat 6:19-21 ESV “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, (20) but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. (21) For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Mat 6:31-33 ESV “Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ (32) For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. (33) But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. ”
Dollar’s whole ministry is a refutation of these words of Jesus. Instead of seeking first the kingdom of God, he seeks and teaches seeking temporal prosperity with God as the agent. As I said in my comment to the previous post on this blog, there is one gospel that will save us, and it is a gospel of submission to the cross of Jesus. The true gospel of Christ doesn’t teach us how to fulfill worldly ambitions, it calls us to die to them. Any other gospel is useless, except to help us understand this teaching of Jesus:
Mat 7:13-14 ESV “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. (14) For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”
Those who call attention to where that wide gate is leading are not helping the Devil. We are resisting him, and those who are unwittingly leading souls down the path to hell.
Thank- You Sir for your research based on this topic. Is it possible to get a link or a copy of the message to hear what he was saying. Also Sir how long ago was this and do you know if he still carries this belief confidently because mingling with folks like KCM and many others would mean to me they also caryy the bieleif. Lastly. I know of a Pastor that has manipulated his congregation with this horror and still doies. How do you think that should be addressed rightfully. Thank you Sir and Your blessing are unstopable
